Why grassroots football teams are vital for communities…
Sports create MASSIVE bonding experiences across the world – everyone tunes in to the UEFA Euros or the FIFA World Cup, bursting with excitement to see whether their country or favourite player emerges victorious! And whilst not everyone can achieve football success on the world stage, we all want a taste of it… and this is where grassroots football comes in!
The most inclusive and welcoming type of football, grassroots is both non-professional and non-elite, meaning anyone is accepted (regardless of age, ability, ethnicity – nothing else matters apart from football).
So – why is grassroots football so important for children, adults, and local communities?
Read on to find out why…
Does grassroots football help the economy?
One of the top questions about grassroots is whether it has any economic value – yes, it does!
As discovered by the FA Grassroots Football Strategy 2020-2024, there was a £1 billion investment in facilities by the National Football Facilities Strategy, of which 10% is in the 10 most deprived areas in England. This shows how fantastic grassroots football is, as investing in more disadvantaged areas means absolutely ANYONE has the chance to play.
A lot of people who are a part of grassroots are volunteers – there are at least 1.4 million volunteers helping to make grassroots football great. Thanks to those dedicating their free time to grassroots, its economic value has a staggering worth of £10.769 billion per year!
Physical and mental wellbeing
The positive impact of football on both your physical and mental wellbeing is one of its most obvious benefits.
It’s scientifically proven that physical exercise, such as football, improves mental well-being. The FA Grassroots Football Strategy found that playing football reduced 66,500 cases of depression and anxiety for children, as well as the reduction of 203,300 cases of physical and mental health disorders for adults – this is amazing to see!
Another fantastic thing about football is that it combats childhood obesity and other health risks – this is because it’s an aerobic sport that requires lots of moving around, which helps with endurance and muscular strength. It’s a super enjoyable way of exercising!
Opportunities for all age groups
Grassroots isn’t just your local Sunday league team – it can be football schools made for toddlers, or even a team that your group of friends has set up. Anyone can be a part of it, whether you’re 70 years old or 2 years old!
Grassroots clubs are a great way to contribute to your local community and get to know others from different backgrounds. By being exposed to people from all walks of life, members become more open-minded and appreciate others.
Football is a unifying force for so many people, as it provides a safe space for children and adults alike!
Social development and teamwork
For young people particularly, grassroots football is excellent for improving social skills. As it’s a team sport, grassroots encourage players to communicate, cooperate, and support one another in achieving a common goal. Players develop life skills as well as football skills!
It also builds character by developing leadership qualities and responsibility – every player has their role, whether it be goalkeeper or captain, and so they all need to understand and fulfil these positions. This is important for players, as it creates a strong work ethic and great commitment!
So – joining a grassroots football team can help you develop in so many different ways.
Positive role models
Need a good role model? Look no further than a grassroots coach! Coaches are essential in promoting positive values and play a big role in shaping the players’ experiences. They communicate important messages about inclusivity, respect, teamwork, and they create an environment where everyone feels welcome.
It’s important to have a community of well-equipped coaches who can enhance the overall experience for players of all ages – this contributes to a positive environment within the game.
Cognitive development
Football is a fantastic way for kids (and adults) to sharpen their quick decision-making, strategic thinking, and focus—all skills that play a big role in their overall cognitive development. Research shows that children who play football regularly often see improvements in their problem-solving abilities, memory, and attention.
It’s amazing how much children can grow, both on and off the field!
